Mental Illness

Manic episode last for at least 1 week.
1. Elevated, Expansive or Irritable Mood
It characterized by –
(a) Euphoria (mild elevation of mood): Increased sense of psychological well-being and happiness.
(b) Elation (moderate elevation of mood): Feeling of confidence and enjoyment along with increased psychomotor activity.
(c) Exaltation: Intense elation with delusion of grandeur.
(d) Ecstasy: Intense sense of rapture or blissfulness.
2. Psychomotor Activity
There is increased psychomotor activity ranging from over activeness and restlessness to manic excitement where person is on-the-toe-on-the-go.
3. Speech and Thought:
The person is more talkative and there is flight of ideas.
4. Goal-directed Activity:
The person is usually alert, trying to do many things at one time.
5. Other Features:
Sleep is usually reduced with a decreased need for sleep. Appetite may be increased but latter there is usually decreased food intake due to marked over activity.
Insight into illness is absent.
Psychotic features like delusions, hallucinations, which are not understandable in the context of mood disorder e.g. delusion of persecution.
