    Depression and anxiety

How closely to you all find that your depression is linked with anxiety? When I suffer from depression, I always get terrible anxiety. Not what they call "panic attacks" - I've never had one of those. But a constant feeling of anxiety, along with physical symptoms that are subtly different from my depression.

A doctor not long ago told me that depression and anxiety are "two sides of the same coin". Does this ring true with anyone else? Anyone else always have both, rather than just one?

    Re: Depression and anxiety

dismil i know what you mean during my last severe episode of depression the anxiety was minimal but during this episode the anxiety is as bad if not worse than the depression.i feel scared about everything and anything from if my house looks clean enough to whether i will end up alone in my 60's everything about life just seems terrifying
before this bout of depression came on i had some anxiety but nothing like this
i shake and get a dery mouth and pounding heart.i sometimes feel i will faint as my head spins as the anxiety seems to take over me
i assure you you are not alone
i hope we can both get through this and be happy again

    Re: Depression and anxiety

I do think the two are closely linked. Most antidepressants also help with anxiety, and it is thought the same brain chemicals are implicated in both conditions.

I find that my anxiety is related to thoughts I have about things that could happen. I think a lot about what might happen in a situation. When my depression is not so bad, I don't get so many negative assumptions about things that could go wrong, and so I get less anxious.

I often get to enjoy both myself.

With me, one influences the other though. Unless I'm trying to sleep, then anxiety is king.

    Re: Depression and anxiety

    I get this too
infact anxiety is probably worse than the depression in my case
I use to have panick attacks before goin to work.. i didnt know what they were until i saw someone! i used to randomly feel very dizzy and light headed and get tummy upset and headache.. only before i went into work... and i thought i was ill every time but then it got to a point where i realised it was only when i was thinkin about goin to work or waking there after 6 form..
    They can be quite minor
I get the same thing when i go to town now .. cos i rarely go there and so many bad things happened to me there
if im meeting a friend i will get really panicky getting ready at home and shakey
and i hate being around people when im in town
ive been applying for jobs recently and at one point i wouldnt even take C.V in i had to get a friend to because i was thinking that they wouldnt give me a job because theyd think i was ugly, or i wasnt dressed smart enough.. or wasnt confident enough.. or even that they knew about my past!!

more often than not the anxiety leads to the depression!

I get the same thing about exercising and weight.. if i worry about getting fat, i start to think i am fat and become depressed etc and worry about exercise........

I did an online test on livelifetothefull.com and it tells you your levels of anxiety compared with depression. Its very helpful and it will certainly make things clearer for you if you are unsure about whether you can have both etc.. xx

    Re: Depression and anxiety

I was diagnosed with both depression and anxiety. I definitely tend to find that with any increase of one, the other increases also.

    Re: Depression and anxiety

There is no doubt in my mind that the two are linked. I have never met a depressed person who didn't also suffer anxiety. It is true that with one comes the other hey. My anxiety has always been pretty bad but the depression made it a lot worse. Considering killing people who you thought were going to hurt you was a clear link when a think about. When you're depressed, you tend to not care if you were to die doing it.

    Re: Depression and anxiety

Of course they are linked, but they are not the same thing. My anxiety level varies -- anywhere from bad to horrible. But the depression never lets up. I can take the edge off the anxiety with drugs and alcohol. But the depression is always still there. And the depression is so horrible, so crushing, that even with the edge taken off the anxiety, it is unbearable. In my case, a major contributor to both the anxiety and the depression is the hopeless desperation (and desperate hopelessness) that comes from knowing I will live the rest of my life in this lonely prison. There is no pill or drug or therapy that changes that. I know because I've tried them all. They don't work. Not for me.

    Re: Depression and anxiety

I also suffer from both depression and anxiety. While meds have helped for the anxiety, they have only helped a little for the depression. Lately the depression seems to have gotten worse and everything that happens lately seems like the end of the world. I feel like crying over everything. I can't seem to stay happy for very long anymore at least when I'm around people. If I'm around my pets everything is ok. I just want the depression to go away so that everything an be ok again.
