Implanon linked with Depression
I recently received a memo, outlining the process of Implanon insertion.
There was a warning at the bottom of the memo stating:
"Women with a history of depression should be carefully observed. Consideration should be given to removing Implanon™ in patients who become significantly depressed."
I asked around & discovered that many woman & a larger amount of young adults/teens have experienced unusual mood swings, crying, acne & weight gain, amongst other side effects. And for those who already suffered from anxiety or depression the side effects were compounded!!
Many of them had the implant removed.
I was shocked, it's obviously not something that is commonly known. But we recommend Implanon to many woman at the shelter to protect against an unwanted pregnancy.
Has anyone else experienced side effects like this from implanon?
(for those of you who don't know, Implanon is the only contraceptive implant available for woman in Australia, it is a small plastic rod containing the hormone progestogen. It is inserted just under the skin of the upper arm & provides contraception against pregnancy for up to 3 years if inserted properly & left there)

Re: Implanon linked with Depression
This was really interesting to find out Epona! I have Implanon, and I guess I may have found my mood has worsened slightly over the last couple of months, but nothing really significant. Something to definately keep an eye on though.

Re: Implanon linked with Depression
I read something before about how implanon was linked with depression. I thought about taking implanon when I was with my last boyfriend. I then started doing my research and saw people saying they never had depression until they started taking implanon. Then only weeks after starting with implanon they noticed they were more depressed and it only got worse. Since I was already suffering from depresion I decided it was not a good idea to take implanon and risk worsening my depression. There are many other forms of birth control available. I think you should really consider other forms of birth control if you already have depression, but do your research.

Re: Implanon linked with Depression
I don't think Implanon has affected my depression all that much. I was depressed long before taking implanon and I havn't seen any noticable change. Too bad, if only it were as easy as stopping my birth control to solved my issues, but of course it's not that easy.

Re: Implanon linked with Depression
Thanx and that also affects other forms of Birth control. I know because I was on bc 2 separate times. Once while on celexa and other after I went off celexa. Wasn't on any other one as well. My mom was on bc, but not very long. It was during the 1st generation of bc then 2nd or 3rd generation of them.
This also goes for hormonal replacements as well. Basically, my mom was on it for a few yrs because her OB/GYN thought it was a good idea. My mom did as well because shes a register nurse. Now, shes been off of it for a couple of yrs now (June). Of course when she went off of it she was sick. In the end she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, but lucky it was caught in the early stages of it. To me I'm torn on this because I'm all for mainstream medicine. At the same time it comes with a price and I prefer natural medicine more.
Then my fraternal twin sister and my friend's mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in the last yr. It was caught early enough to get treatment, but now her shes having complications from the surgery and etc. Unsure if its her mother or what. At the same time its been hard on her and etc in her family. Which I prefer not to get into on here. Like my mom and my dad, my sister, and etc.
Believe thats it for now.

Re: Implanon linked with Depression
I have had minor depression problems off and on my whole life, but never suicidal or life disrupting. With the exception of my postpartum depression after my sons birth and that was short lived. I got Implanon a little over two years ago and slipped into a deep depression. I got so depressed and emotional that I became suicidal and started self mutilating. I have never been a cutter before. It was bad enough that I had to quit working. I have tried anti-depressants, counseling and diet change. While at times I feel I am improving it's not long before I feel bad again and start hurting myself. I am only now starting to look at my hormones and birth control as a source of it. In the past when I have talked to the my doctors about my depression maybe being linked to my birth control (i have been on birth control since I was 13 and only had maybe 5 periods in the last 15 years) they don't seem to concerned about it and tell me to take more anti-depressants. After doing more research I feel my doctors might be wrong. I have plans to have it removed soon and I hope that will help me be the person I was before it.

Re: Implanon linked with Depression
I have recently become aware of the fact that my depression (amongst other side effects) are not just coincidental nor my body getting used to the implanon. It has been 3 months now since I had it inserted and ever since that time my moods have been terrible. I was diagnosed with severe depression in my teens and suffered eating disorders in their ugliest form. I have been free from depression and eating disorders for over 6 years and ever since I had the implanon inserted I have noticed the early signs of depression creeping back. Not only this, but despite the fact that in no way shape or form am I suffering from an eating disorder again - I have lost so much weight that I look sick! I am self conscious of how I look to others as a result and no matter how much or what I eat, I cannot seem to put on or keep on weight. And no this is not a blessing in disguise - I look unhealthy, my clothes dont fit I look gaunt and tired and It is a cause for concern because I can only imagine what others really think!! I am not happy, My skin breaks out and leaves disgusting scabs all over my face, I have no sex drive, I am suspiscious of my partners fidelity, I am nervous and anxious EVERYTHING IS GOING BACKWARDS!! My reasons for having implanon inserted were mainly to combat heavy and unmanagable periods and PMS. Although this has been a sucess, it is not worth it when I look at all the other side effects that I get instead! I feel like I made a deal with the devil!

Re: Implanon linked with Depression
I had the implant in for nearly 6 years a few years back and at the time suffered severe panic attacks, depression, aniety but didnt think it was anything to do with the implant. Got it out due to acne issues but I got it back in recently and already the anxiety is back with a bang, depression also. I think this could have been my problem years ago but i never but the depression and the implant together. I am now thinkin i will have 2 get it out altogether
