need new psychiatrist

My psychiatrist is retiring this week. I see him today for the last time. I'm a bit bummed, because he was going to help me in trying to get disability. I have had psychiatrists for 26 years....but am a little nervous to be picking out a new one. Does anyone have suggestions for me? Thanks.

I'm sure your psychiatrist can recommend someone for you that will give similar advice/guidance to that which you were receiving from him/her. However, if you are looking to find a new type of practitioner, that is a different story. You could look into seeing a holistic practitioner who might talk with you about the current drugs you are taking for you condition, but also other treatments you could explore (nutrition, mind/body, herbal etc.) either in addition to your pharmaceuticals or instead of them. The internet can be a starting point to find an alternative practitioner, but there are many things to consider (certification, experience, training etc.) so make sure you do your research! Really figure out what you want out of the practitioner you seek, which will make finding the right one that much easier!

Well, my old doctor was a no-show when I went in for my appointment yesterday. It seems he decided to go on vacation a week early. There were things that kind of bugged me about him, and this sure was one of them - as his office didn't even get a hold of me to let me know. It's a 35min drive (one way) for me. I did have an appointment with my psychologist though, and he highly recommended the doctor who is replacing mine. He said he listens to the patients much better and works well with the counselors. He has been a doc for 26yrs. So now I have an appointment with him on Aug 31st.
