Why Believe?
Hi, Im new to this forum but have posted on another for the past few months. Let me just give a little back ground info on myself.
At age 6 I was diagnosed with OCD, this has given me antisocial tendencies because I feel different and ashamed. Not only that but with my OCD I overthink and analyze everything. This being afraid to go out has pushed me into a depression, (you can kind of see a trend). So to summarize I have OCD, antisocial tendencies, anxiety disorder, depression, hypochondria.
Anyways, finished with the formalities. So Im here to discuss why I do not believe is a creator or a diety figure. This is important to me because it is something that my "problems" have made me believe.
I believe that we, as humans, are nothing more than an intelligent species on this planet. We are special in the sense that we have the ability to learn and communicate and create. There is no doubt in my mind, however, that by then end of this planets history that we will be a lesser species on this earth, provided we don't kill it off by then of course.
THis begs the point of view that we are not special, which of course we aren't. But if we aren't special why does God care about us? He/She/It doesn't. There are 180 billion stars in our galaxy and 180 billion galaxies in this universe. We would be a spec of dust on the creators coffee table.
So if there is no creator what's the point on life? Well does there have to be? As an animal our instinct is to survive. But as we are able to learn and perceive the things around us, (gravity, rainfall, sun sets etc), we are scared by what we don't understand and have a cop out excuse called faith. This faith is what gives most people the answer to life.
Some people will say so if there is no God whats the point to living. Well in that question they have made some assumptions. One is that God is the reason to live. Another is that if God is a creator and no one created him then his life must have intrinsic value. So if that is true for God why could it not be true for us? That our life matters because it matters to us.
I don't know if anyone will take the time to read this or respond.
If you have read this I thank you and would like to hear your views, and if we disagree I would love to have an intelligent discussion with you.

Re: Why Believe?
Voted unsure because I'm an agnostic. Even though I was born and raised as pretty much non observant catholic.

Re: Why Believe?
I have really similar beliefs to you. It's refreshing to find someone with something like this in common.

That's awesome. Living in a world of intolerance and ignorance to reason it is nice to find someone who can think and not be offended by such blasphemy as my own lol

Re: Why Believe?
I was raised Catholic. I did all the typical Catholic stuff. I was even an alter boy. But something was amiss. I was Catholic fed but Spirit led. At age 13 or so I was led right out those doors. I studied other religions especially buddhism. But then I started to read the Bible for myself.
Does God exist?
In Exodus 3:14 the Bible says "And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you." What a profound statement. I AM!! or I EXIST. Putting existentials aside God also gave Moses the Ten Commandments.
In Exodus 20 the Ten Commandments are listed. By that list I am a blasphemous, lying, adulterous, theif. That only covers four of the commandments. I am not doing so well. If I have broken just one I would be condemned to eternity in hell. I am a sinner against GOD!
So what do I do?
NOTHING!! There is nothing I can do by my own accord! Thankfully an atonement has been made. God sent His only Son to shed his blood and DIE for my sins. It says this in John chapter 3:
16For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
18He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
19And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
20For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
21But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
It also says that those who love darkness (unbelievers) will not come to the light. They hate the light because they are evil lovers of darkness that are afraid to make their sins known.
I believe in Jesus Christ. I know that I am a wretched sinner. I truly repent.
IT IS FINISHED.

Re: Why Believe?
ALthough I myself do not believe, I must admit, belief is a great comfort and could be quite beneficial, it could provide structure and hope when hope is needed.
ALso, I would describe your tendencies as asocial. Anti social is not what it sounds like, anti social tendencies are basically sociopathic tendencies! I agree with your views though, I live because I want to, thats a good enough reason for me. I myself do not feel the need for some outside source above myself to give me a reason for living, nor do I feel the need to do what I believe is good because that above power says it's good.
If there is no road to take, make your own road.
